What Is the Difference Between a Fetish and a Kink?

Aug 17, 2024

What is the difference between a fetish and a kink?

So, theoretically, a fetish is something that you need in order to be sexually satisfied and a kink is something you enjoy but you don’t necessarily need it in order to be sexually satisfied.

That is like the technical definition.

In general, a lot of times fetishes are about a specific act or a specific item.

So, they’re often very limited in scope whereas kinks are often a little bit more broad.

You enjoy impact play as a kink but you have a fetish for single tail whips.

So, there’s often a difference in terms of specificity versus breadth.

But I think that it’s an interesting definitional thing and in practice, I don’t know that it super much matters.

I think that in terms of how people actually interact with their partners and the world of BDSM, I don’t know that it makes a ton of difference.

A fetish and a kink I think could be just different degrees of the same experience or they could be different again levels of specificity of the same experience.

So, I think they have a lot more in common than they do different.
