Is Non-binary and Agender the Same Thing?

Sep 7, 2024

Are non-binary and agender the same thing?

No.

So non-binary is a huge umbrella term that covers anyone whose experience of gender does not fall into the binary boxes of man or woman.

So anyone who does not identify as just a man or a woman can be considered non-binary.

Not all people who could fall under that umbrella consider themselves to be non-binary.

So again, like what labels people choose for themselves.

Some people include folks who are intersexed under the non-binary umbrella.

Some people who are intersexed do not want to be under that umbrella and don’t identify with it.

People who are agender are people who do not have – they don’t identify with any gender.

They experience themselves as not having gender.

People who are non-binary can be anything from agender to gender-fluid, to like – I can’t remember the words.

So agender to gender-fluid to like gender-queer.

Lots of different ways that it can show up and so they’re not the same thing but they can have overlap.

Not everyone who is agender considers themselves non-binary even.

So again, what labels people choose for themselves may be different than technical definitions.

It’s more important that we honor what people choose for themselves because they are the experts on them and labels are not boxes we put people into.

They are things that we get to choose to describe ourselves.
